Spinalonga
During your stay in Elounda don’t fail to visit the island of Spinalonga which is situated opposite Elounda.

The castle on the island was built during the Venetian Period by using building material taken from a pre – existing ancient fortress. It was founded in 1579 by Luca Michiel, the Venetian “provleptis” (official in charge of the region) , as inscribed on the stone above the main entrance, as part of the Venetian effort to organize the defense system of Crete, in order to face the Turkish expansion on one hand and the pirate attacks on the other.
